ARONIA BERRY

The aronia berry is a super fruit, containing more antioxidants than blueberries, cranberries, elderberries, and raspberries! Numerous studies have linked aronia berries to potential health benefits such as helping to fight cardiovascular disease, normalizing blood pressure, diabetes prevention & help, urinary tract health, weight control, anti-carcinogenic effect, and many more. Why are aronia berries so beneficial? They contain a high level of polyphenols, which are micronutrients with antioxidant activity found in various plant foods. Within the polyphenol family, flavonoids are of particular interest as they have both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Aronia berries contain an extremely high concentration of a certain flavonoid called anthocyanin, having 1,480mg of anthocyanin per 100g of fresh aronia fruit. The black aronia species (Aronia melanocarpa) contains higher levels of anthocyanin than purple or red aronia.

ANTI-CARCINOGENIC EFFECT

The positive effect of the black colored berries in fighting cancer is well known. A survey conducted in 2003 demonstrated that the berry supplied an all-natural defense to battle against colon cancer. An article, “Darker fruits could fight cancer”, written by the researchers at Ohio State University describes that darker fruits and berries could possibly combat cancer. The aronia berry (chokeberry) is specifically mentioned in the article, “(A)nthocyanin pigments from black carrots and radishes slowed the development of cancer cells by in between 50 to 80%. But compounds from chokeberries for example killed up to a fifth of existing cells. Without impacting upon healthy ones.”

"Anthocyanin-rich extracts, potent antioxidants and commercially available food coloring agents, have been reported to inhibit growth of various cancer cell lines. We investigated the effect of semipurified anthocyanin-rich extract from fruits of Aronia meloncarpa, on normal colon and colon cancer cell lines."

URINARY TRACT HEALTH

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) occur to huge numbers of people throughout the world. The primary causal agent is Escherichia coli and symptoms consist of repeated feeling and/or really need to urinate, discomfort while urinating, and also cloudy urine. It is well-known that cranberries are great in the combat with UTI, yet research has shown that aronia berries usually are 5 to 10 times more efficient, due to the greater dosage of quinic acid inside them, that is shown to avoid urinary infections.

Extra lab research demonstrated that Aronia Melanocarpa is beneficial in cutting micro-organism growth for many bacteria which includes Escherichia coli, therefore showing aronia berries assist in preventing and also treat UTI and maintain excellent urinary tract health.

"Urinary tract infection (UTI) is a major problem in nursing homes, and the mainstay of treatment is antibiotics. The increasing prevalence of uropathogens resistant to antimicrobial agents has stimulated interest in specific nutrients, for example, cranberries, to prevent recurring UTI. Black chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa) is a rich source of phenolics, and thus, dietary intake of black chokeberry juice may reduce the incidences of UTI requiring medical treatment."

EYE PROTECTION

Aronia berries, of all other healthy advantages, offer excellent safety for the eyes. The super berries contain a great deal of carotene, which safeguards cells from damage as well as the eyes from cataract formation. Also, they are abundant with flavonoid anti-oxidants just like luteins and zeaxanthins. Zeaxanthin has got photo-filtering effects on UV rays and therefore safeguards eyes from the age-related macular disease within the elderly (ARMD) and eye inflammation (uveitis). Scientists in Japan have already been calculating the end results of aronia crude extract (ACE) on eye inflammation. The research was released in Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science some years ago.

"The results suggest that ACE has a dose-dependent anti–ocular inflammatory effect that is due to the direct blocking of the expression of the iNOS and COX-2 enzymes and leads to the suppression of the production of NO, PGE2, and TNF-α."

A member of the Rose family, black chokeberry is a deciduous shrub which can grow to a height of 3 to 6 feet tall. The fine-toothed leaves are medium green and hairless, with raised glands along the top of the midrib. In spring, the white bisexual flowers form clusters that are 2 to 2 1⁄2 inches across. The primary pollinators are small bees. As the seasons progress, the trees turn a deep glossy green. In mid to late summer the fruit begins to form. As the pea-sized fruit ripens, it darkens to a purplish-black color. The fruit are pomes which will begin to drop from the plants shortly after ripening. The fruits are quite juicy, but will begin to shrivel up after ripening. The juice and seeds are deep purple in color. There are 1 to 5 small seeds per pome.

In conclusion, chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa), a lesser known berry fruit, is one of the richest plant sources of highly interesting phenolic phytochemicals including procyanidins and anthocyanins. The high content as well as the pattern of the phenolic constituents seems to be responsible for the wide range of its potential medicinal and therapeutic effects. Further studies are needed to understand the beneficial effects reported so far also from the mechanistic point of view. However, it seems desirable that the spread and popularity of Aronia food products in the future will increase and expand consumers' choice for healthy berry fruits.
